Allison Schulnik

Bomb Magazine is writing about the NY art fairs on Facebook, and is excited about Schulnik's work, so I had to have a look-see.

Love that sculptural Auerbach thickness. Beautiful, disturbing images.

Kim Dorland has a similarly excretory manner of painting that is more pleasing aesthetically, but I like Schulnik's creepy quotient. For uberthick paint-on-paint technique check out the Leon Kossoff show at Mitchell Innes and Nash

I like the way Schulnik really exploits the paint, makes the thickness describe the form - both Dorland and Kossoff are also drawing/outlining in a way that flattens them for me. Schulnick goes all the way there, doesn't straddle two worlds.

p.s. the above is a good example of why I rarely talk about art. I'm just going to trust you know what I'm trying to say.
